AMD’s Phoenix SoC

AMD has made significant strides in improving its mobile and small form factor offerings. In the past, its CPUs were not as power-efficient as Intel’s, and its integrated GPUs used outdated architectures. However, recent products like Van Gogh and Rembrandt have brought about improvements by integrating RDNA 2 into the GPUs. Phoenix, the latest SoC from AMD, combines Zen 4 cores and RDNA 3 graphics, along with various accelerators to enhance power efficiency. The CPU side features eight Zen 4 cores with a different cache setup, while the GPU side utilizes AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture, providing better performance and bandwidth. Additionally, Phoenix includes a video engine, an XDNA AI engine for machine learning inference, and an audio controller for offloading signal processing. Phoenix’s variable Infinity Fabric clocks and optimizations for power efficiency further enhance performance and reduce power consumption. Overall, Phoenix is a powerful and efficient package with potential applications in laptops, handhelds, and other mobile devices.
