The Biden administration’s recent push for nuclear development, including tax credits and a $6bn fund, has fuelled optimism among industry boosters who are predicting an atomic renaissance after decades in the dark ages. The Department of Energy recently suggested America could triple its nuclear power generation by 2050, although the cost of initial designs is a key obstacle. Other concerns include fuel supply, the dilemma of spent fuel, and finding enough skilled workers to build and operate new plants. Sceptics have heard industry leaders tout nuclear renaissance before, but nuclear’s recent green makeover and bipartisan support could make it the power source of the future.
