An amateur historian has discovered a long-lost short story by Bram Stoker

Amateur historian Brian Cleary made a groundbreaking discovery at the National Library of Ireland – a lost short story by Bram Stoker, titled Gibbet Hill, published in 1890. This ghostly tale sheds light on Stoker’s development as an author, marking a significant point on his path to creating Dracula. The story follows a murdered sailor and three criminals hanged on a gallows, set in Gibbet Hill in Surrey. Cleary found the story during a break from work due to hearing loss, showcasing impressive detective work. The discovery will be published alongside artwork, with proceeds benefiting the Charlotte Stoker Fund for infant hearing loss research. The find will be highlighted at the upcoming Bram Stoker festival.
