An Update on Apple M1/M2 GPU Drivers

Alyssa Rosenzweig provided an update on the Apple M1 and M2 GPUs kernel graphics driver at the X.Org Developers Conference (XDC) 2024. She discussed the progress made in achieving various graphics standards, such as OpenGL 4.6 conformance and support for tessellation shaders. Controversially, she mentioned limitations in the hardware, making it less useful for OpenGL, Vulkan, and Direct3D implementations. Surprisingly, she outlined a creative solution involving OpenCL C code to address the hardware constraints, resulting in successful terrain tessellation performance. Additionally, Rosenzweig shared plans for achieving DirectX compatibility through innovative virtualization methods, enabling high-end gaming experiences on Apple hardware.
