Anchovy Sex Is a Force of Nature

Scientists studying algae blooms in a bay in northwestern Spain were surprised to discover that high levels of turbulence in the water were caused by an anchovy orgy. Anchovies are known for their amorous behavior, with female anchovies releasing thousands of eggs each year that are promptly fertilized by males. This “frantic activity” creates significant turbulence, which is crucial for mixing heat and nutrients throughout the ocean. While animal movement is not typically considered a major cause of ocean mixing, this study suggests that anchovy spawning may play a more important role than previously thought, especially in shallower waters. Further research is needed to understand the extent to which marine animals contribute to ocean mixing.
