Apollo astronaut Frank Borman has died

Frank Borman, a NASA astronaut and former chief executive of Eastern Air Lines, passed away at the age of 95. He is best known for commanding Apollo 8, the first crewed mission to orbit the moon and return safely to Earth. Borman had a distinguished career as a pilot, including successfully recovering an F-104 fighter with a failed engine. He played a crucial role in NASA’s missions leading up to the moon landing and received accolades for his leadership on Apollo 8. Borman’s strict adherence to protocol earned him the nickname “The Colonel” within the space agency. Later, he led Eastern Air Lines through financial challenges but ultimately resigned after the company’s acquisition and subsequent struggles during airline deregulation. Throughout his life, Borman maintained a mission-oriented mindset and strived for excellence in all his endeavors.
