Apple Ordered by UK to Create Global iCloud Encryption Backdoor

Last month, the British government issued a controversial order to Apple demanding a back door for access to all encrypted user data globally. This demand under the UK Investigatory Powers Act was labeled the “Snooper’s Charter” and drew criticism for its unprecedented invasion of privacy. Apple might stop offering encrypted services in the UK to protect its users’ privacy, as it did with FaceTime and iMessage. The order threatens Apple’s Advanced Data Protection and may result in Apple leaving the UK market. Cyber experts warn that such access could lead to data breaches. Apple’s firm stance on encryption has roots in previous battles for user privacy.
