The United States Copyright Office is seeking comments on the copyright law and policy issues related to artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The Office is particularly interested in the use of copyrighted works to train AI models, the transparency and disclosure of copyrighted works used in AI, and the legal status of AI-generated outputs. The Office has previously addressed copyright in AI-generated material and has received applications to register works containing AI-generated material. Public comments are due by October 18, 2023, and further information can be found on the Copyright Office website. This inquiry is part of the Office’s broader AI Initiative, which includes public listening sessions and educational webinars.
