Atom feed format was born 20 years ago

This month marks the 20th anniversary of the development of the Atom feed format. It all began with a blog post from Sam Ruby, who asked for feedback on what makes a well-formed blog entry. Unlike the unplanned development of RSS 2.0, the creation of Atom was a collective effort involving software developers, web publishers, and technologists. The project grew to over 1,500 pages on a project wiki, with decisions on everything, including the name of the format. After a lengthy discussion, Atom emerged as the chosen name. The format eventually became an IETF standard in 2005 and is now widely used.
