Australia has become the first country to ban engineered stone due to the rising cases of the lung disease silicosis among workers. The ban, which will start on July 1, 2024, in most states and territories, comes after hundreds of workers developed silicosis from working with the popular material used for kitchen benches and bathroom vanities. Trade unions, health organizations, and personal injury law firms have applauded the decision, stating that it will save lives. However, engineered stone manufacturer Caesarstone expressed disappointment, arguing that the ban fails to address the root cause of the rising silicosis rates – poor compliance with safety standards.
