Australia’s spies, cops want accountable encryption- a.k.a. access to backdoors

The director general of Australia’s main intelligence agency, Mike Burgess, urged social networks to assist in investigating terrorism, child exploitation, and extremist groups. He emphasized the need for tech companies to cooperate with law enforcement to access encrypted messages. Commissioner Reece Kershaw of the Australian Federal Police echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of tech companies respecting court orders to provide information for criminal investigations. Burgess also warned about the potential risks of AI, including its use by extremists to plan attacks. ASIO is utilizing AI to enhance intelligence gathering, but encryption remains a challenge for their efforts. Burgess emphasized the need for responsible encryption to combat security threats effectively.
