Bees can learn, remember, think and make decisions

Bees are essential for human life, providing one-third of the food we eat with a global value estimated at up to $US577 billion annually. However, their fascinating abilities to perceive the world and navigate, learn, communicate and remember are not widely known. Contrary to popular belief, only about 10% of bees are social, with most leading solitary lives. Bees are intelligent animals that feel pain, can solve problems and have a primitive form of consciousness. Their sensory experience of the world is vastly different to ours, with bees’ vision, sense of smell and sense of touch highly developed. Plants can be a key way people can help bees, through planting native wildflowers, avoiding insecticides and herbicides and providing open ground where burrowing bees can nest.
