Nestled in the Yungas valley, Mururata is home to the hidden Kingdom of the Afro-Bolivians. This small community of mainly farmers has remained largely unrecognized for nearly 200 years, with roots tracing back to enslaved West Africans brought to Bolivia. King Julio, the humble leader of this kingdom, represents the Afro-Bolivian community with a symbolic title. The kingdom’s future rests on the shoulders of Prince Rolando, who aims to continue his father’s work in making the Afro-Bolivian community more visible and recognized. Despite its small size, this kingdom holds a rich history and a promising future.
