Britain’s decade of Art Deco densification

Florin Court, built in 1936, is famous for being Hercule Poirot’s residence in an 80s series. Between 1934 and 1939, over 56,000 flats were built in London within 300 blocks, marking a significant period of development. This boom was sudden after years of minimal flat construction and was influenced by the Garden City movement. Private luxury flats began to appear outside London for the first time. Apartment living was not common in England until the mid-19th century, unlike on the continent. Developers like Bell Property Trust and Beaumont Properties played a key role in this inter-war flat boom, focusing on modernity and convenience in marketing campaigns.
