California moves to decriminalize use of magic mushrooms, other psychedelics

California lawmakers have narrowly approved a bill to decriminalize the possession and personal use of natural psychedelics, including “magic mushrooms.” The bill, Senate Bill 58, would remove criminal penalties for the possession and use of substances such as psilocybin and DMT. It also requires the California Health and Human Services Agency to study the therapeutic use of psychedelics and submit a report to the Legislature. The measure, which passed the Senate 21 to 14, would only apply to those 21 and older and does not authorize the sale of psychedelics in dispensaries. Supporters argue that psychedelics have shown promise in treating PTSD, depression, and addiction. Veterans groups believe the bill will destigmatize these substances and provide much-needed relief for those suffering from mental health issues. However, there are concerns about the lack of regulation and potential risks associated with unrestricted access to psychedelics. The fate of the bill now lies with Gov. Gavin Newsom.
