Californians will be able to delete all personal online data in first-in-US law

In a win for privacy advocates and consumers, California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed the Delete Act into law. The bill, introduced by State Senator Josh Becker, gives Californians the ability to request the deletion of their personal information from all data brokers in the state. Previously, individuals had to file separate requests with each company. The Delete Act requires data brokers to register with the California privacy protection agency and establishes a single-page request system for Californians to have their data deleted. Non-compliant brokers will face fines or penalties. Advertising companies have voiced concerns about the law, while privacy advocates hail it as a step towards regaining control of personal information.
