Timothy Barker, a former Band Manager at Duncan’s First Nation in Canada, claims to have been falsely charged with orchestrating a complex e-commerce fraud. Known as “triangulation fraud,” this type of scam involves a consumer unknowingly purchasing an item online from a seller who does not actually own the item. Instead, the seller uses stolen payment card data to purchase the item from an online retailer. Barker purchased several items from a seller on Amazon.ca and later received messages from an Ontario woman accusing him of hacking her Walmart account. Despite providing evidence of his innocence, Barker was arrested and subsequently lost his job. The woman whose account was hacked does not believe this was a case of triangulation fraud. The charges against Barker have since been stayed, leaving him in legal limbo.
