Carpentopod: A Walking Table Project

In 2008, I created software to generate optimal walking mechanisms, which eventually led to the creation of the Carpentopod, a wireless walking wooden coffee table. The Carpentopod leg linkage was evolved through thousands of virtual generations to optimize walking speed, clearance, and material use. The design process involved careful consideration of leg tip movement to minimize foot slip. The table required precision components made of laminated bamboo and utilized a unique leg linkage design. Two motors controlled by an Arduino system allowed the table to move wirelessly via a joystick, despite some technical challenges. Overall, the Carpentopod is a fascinating blend of robotics and craftsmanship with a touch of whimsy.
