Could the ‘flying piano’ help transform air cargo?

Aerolane is mimicking migrating birds to develop cargo gliders that surf air currents to reduce fuel costs. Their test aircraft, known as the “flying piano”, is equipped with twin engines that idle for electrical power while gliding. The plan is to use data to guide unmanned cargo planes through air wakes and turbulence without burning fuel. Airbus has also experimented with this technique to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel burn. While there are concerns about safety and public acceptance, experts see potential in combining gliding and surfing in the sky for more efficient air freight transport. Ultimately, Aerolane aims for autonomous operation and significant fuel savings in the aviation industry.
