The European Parliament has officially adopted its position on the draft ‘Regulation laying down rules to prevent and combat child sexual abuse’ (CSAR), marking a positive development for human rights despite the controversial nature of the proposed law. EDRi, an advocacy organization, has long spoken out against the mass scanning and encryption-breaking measures proposed in the draft. The Parliament has listened to concerns about the violation of privacy rights and has rejected rules that would force companies to scan private messages without reasonable suspicion. The legislative process is still ongoing, with negotiations between the Parliament and the Council of EU Member States yet to take place.
