Daisugi, the Japanese technique of growing trees out of other trees (2020)

In Japan, the traditional style of architecture requires a substantial amount of wood, but by the 15th century, the country was facing a shortage of seedlings and suitable land for cultivation. To solve this problem, the ingenious technique of daisugi was developed. Daisugi involves growing additional trees out of existing trees, creating a kind of giant bonsai. This technique not only prevents deforestation but also produces straight and sturdy timber for constructing roofs. The lumber produced through daisugi is flexible and dense, making it ideal for rafters and roof timber. This unique forestry technique is still admired around the world 600 years later.
