PhD student Kazi Albab Hussain from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln recently conducted research on the presence of microplastics in plastic containers used for baby food packaging. His findings were alarming, indicating that millions to billions of microplastics and nanoplastics were present in the containers when stored in the fridge or at room temperature. Microwaving the containers further increased the release of microplastics and chemicals into the food. The health impacts of ingesting plastic are still uncertain but researchers believe that high exposure to microplastics could lead to various health issues. Experts recommend avoiding plastic containers for food storage and heating and opting for glass alternatives instead.
