Earthquake in Japan yesterday may have shifted land 1.3 meters

Following the powerful earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan’s Geospatial Information Authority (GSI) has analyzed GPS data and found that land in the Noto region near the epicenter may have shifted up to 1.3 meters to the west. The largest shift was observed in Wajima City, where an observation point moved horizontally about 1.3 meters westward. Other areas affected include Anamizu Town and Suzu City, which experienced shifts of about 1 meter to the west and 80 centimeters to the west, respectively. Additionally, Nanao City’s Notojima shifted 60 centimeters northwest towards the Sea of Japan coast. The prefectures of Toyama and Niigata saw a shift of about 20 centimeters to the northwest, while smaller shifts were observed in the Kanto-Koshin region and other areas. GSI will continue to analyze the data for further movements.
