Egypt declared malaria-free after 100-year effort

Egypt has made history by being certified malaria-free by the World Health Organization (WHO) after nearly a century of efforts. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called this achievement “truly historic,” as Egypt’s battle against the disease dates back to the time of the pharaohs. The country is only the third in the Eastern Mediterranean Region to receive this certification. The WHO warned that this is just the beginning of a new phase and urged Egypt to remain vigilant. Efforts to prevent malaria in Egypt date back to the 1920s when measures were taken to limit human-mosquito contact. While vaccines are available in some areas, avoiding mosquito bites remains the most effective way to prevent malaria globally.
