The US Environmental Protection Agency has ordered Inhance Technologies to cease production of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) created through its fluorination process. The process, used to treat millions of plastic containers every year, has been found to create nine PFAS, including three highly toxic ones. The agency is concerned that these substances can leach into products stored in the treated containers. Inhance Technologies claims to have modified its process in recent years, resulting in a 90% reduction in PFAS impurities. However, the EPA has warned the company that it is not in compliance with the Toxic Substances Control Act.
