Escape from Silicon Valley (alternative visions of computation)

The AI industry’s focus on large language model (LLM) systems such as ChatGPT, owned by corporations like Microsoft, Amazon and Google, is a waste of resources and potential. Ideologically fueled by dystopian pop sci-fi like Terminator, there are alternative visions such as the DAIR Institute and Logic(s) magazine that explore other ways of thinking about applied computation. Fictional visions from pop science fiction like Star Trek’s Library Computer Access/Retrieval System provide a more productive vision for the potential of language models, which is being suppressed. It is possible to imagine and build a different computation, one that centers on human needs, without relying on Silicon Valley’s collection of dystopian novels.
