European Court of Human Rights bans weakening of secure end-to-end encryption

The European Court of Human Rights has issued a ruling banning any actions that would weaken secure end-to-end encryption. The judgment argues that encryption is crucial in protecting citizens and companies from hacking, identity theft, fraud, and unauthorized disclosure of confidential information. The Court also emphasized that backdoors in encryption could be exploited by criminal networks, compromising the security of all users’ electronic communications. The judgment suggests alternative methods for monitoring encrypted communications, such as exploiting vulnerabilities in software or using implants on targeted devices. This landmark ruling invalidates the proposed “client-side scanning” surveillance on smartphones, which would destroy everyone’s protection instead of focusing on suspects. The ruling highlights the importance of secure encryption in safeguarding digital privacy.
