Surgeons at the University of Pennsylvania have made progress in using pig livers to support failing human livers. In an experiment, a pig liver was externally attached to a brain-dead human body, successfully filtering blood and acting as a “bridge” to keep the body stable. Animal-to-human organ transplants, known as xenotransplants, have historically failed due to immune system rejection. However, scientists are now using genetically modified pigs to make their organs more compatible. While kidney transplants from genetically modified pigs have been successful, heart transplants have led to patient deaths. The US FDA is considering permitting rigorous studies on pig organs for transplantation. Approximately 10,000 Americans are currently waiting for liver transplants.
