The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has voted in favor of a proposal that would restore net neutrality rules and common-carrier regulation for Internet service providers (ISPs). The plan, put forward by FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, aims to reclassify broadband as a telecommunications service, allowing for greater regulation under Title II of the Communications Act. This proposal is similar to what the FCC did in 2015 when it prohibited ISPs from blocking or throttling traffic or giving priority to Web services for payment. The net neutrality rules were eliminated during Trump’s presidency but are likely to be reinstated after the comment period. Rosenworcel argued that Title II regulation is not just about net neutrality but also provides the FCC with greater authority to protect national security and privacy on broadband networks. Critics claim that the FCC is overstepping its authority, but Rosenworcel believes that the rules are legally sustainable, as they align with court-upheld regulations from 2016.
