FDA Approves First Medication to Reduce Allergic Reactions to Multiple Foods

The FDA approved Xolair injection to reduce allergic reactions in certain adults and children with food allergies, helping to prevent anaphylaxis from accidental exposure. Xolair, a monoclonal antibody drug, binds to the IgE antibody that triggers allergic reactions to multiple foods. Research showed that a significant number of subjects taking Xolair were able to consume specific food proteins without severe allergic symptoms. However, continued allergen avoidance is still necessary. This newly approved use for Xolair provides a treatment option for patients with IgE-mediated food allergies. The drug also comes with warnings, including the potential for anaphylaxis. Patients should not receive Xolair if they have a history of known severe hypersensitivity to it.
