The U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) guideline for developers of U.S. government websites may further accelerate the decline of Mozilla’s Firefox browser. The documentation for developers states that they officially support any browser above 2% usage as observed by analytics.usa.gov. Currently, Firefox only has a 2.2% usage, which is steadily declining over the years. The dominance of Chrome and Safari on mobile devices, as well as corporate and government IT shops favoring Microsoft’s Chromium-based Edge browser, are contributing to Firefox’s loss of “web space.” Once Firefox falls below the 2% threshold, it will be removed from the list of supported browsers, potentially impacting other web developers as well. This could lead to Firefox becoming a shrinking part of the browser market.
