The author, Poul-Henning Kamp, expresses his disdain for the X86 architecture due to market power considerations rather than performance/energy ratio. Kamp purchased a Lenovo T14s G6 with Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM64 CPU for EUR1000 + VAT, which required patches to ARM64-specific interrupt issues on FreeBSD-current. Despite some functionality issues like the keyboard, mouse, and thermal/freq management not working, the overall performance of the new hardware is promising with 12 real CPUs built in, completing a world build in 3210 seconds using 24 Wh of energy. Highly recommended by Kamp for its potential.
