Austin Health clinicians have implanted an electrical nerve stimulation device into a patient with Crohn’s disease, a world-first collaboration with the Bionics Institute, The Florey, and The University of Melbourne. This device aims to prevent inflammation recurring after surgery and could potentially put Crohn’s sufferers into long-term remission, avoiding the cycle of surgery and recovery. The groundbreaking device, which targets the vagus nerve, stimulates anti-inflammatory nerves to address inflammation early, potentially preventing further surgery. The hope is that this treatment will allow patients to continue their lives without the fear of ongoing medication or surgical treatments.
