In Iceland, scientists at the Geothermal Research Cluster (GEORG) are planning to drill into a magma chamber and make scientific history. This project will allow them to study the hidden liquid rock that Earth uses to build its continents, providing our first direct opportunity to do so. While some magma chambers are located just a few kilometers below the Earth’s surface and occasionally leak magma, their exact locations are not commonly known.
