Flipping FLIP ship saved from scrapyard at last minute

The unique FLoating Instrument Platform (FLIP) from the US Navy and Scripps Institution of Oceanography, known for its asparagus-like appearance, was saved from the scrapyard by undersea design company DEEP. Originally built in 1962 to assist in developing an anti-submarine weapon, FLIP has proven to be a valuable research platform over the years. DEEP has secured FLIP and is currently renovating and modernizing it in France. DEEP’s founder, Kristen Tertoole, aims to use FLIP in ocean research and to support underwater habitats. The company plans to relaunch FLIP in 2026, creating excitement in the maritime research community.
