French court issues damages award for violation of GPL

The Court of Appeal of Paris recently ruled that Orange, a French telecom provider, infringed copyright on Entr’Ouvert’s Lasso software and violated the GPL. Orange was ordered to pay €500,000 in compensatory damages and €150,000 for moral damages. Entr’Ouvert’s Lasso software is a reference library for the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) protocol, enabling single sign-on (SSO). This case, which began in 2010, involved issues of copyright infringement and breach of contract, with the Court of Cassation overturning a previous ruling. The compensatory damages were based on lost profits and disgorgement of profits. This case highlights the importance of respecting open-source licenses.
