FTC bans TurboTax from advertising ‘free’ services, calls deceptive advertising

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has found that TurboTax, a popular tax filing software, engaged in deceptive advertising by running ads for “free” tax services that many customers did not qualify for. The FTC ruled that TurboTax cannot advertise its services as free unless it is free for all customers. The company violated the FTC Act by misleading consumers and deceived them into thinking that the services were free. The FTC ordered Intuit, TurboTax’s owner, to clearly disclose the percentage of customers that qualify for the free service and to disclose all terms and conditions. In addition, TurboTax has previously faced allegations of steering low-income Americans away from free tax-filing services towards the paid version of its services.
