Functional ultrasound through the skull

Functional ultrasound imaging (fUSI) is a cutting-edge technology for imaging brain activity with better spatial resolution than fMRI. The hardware for ultrasound is compact and affordable, sparking interest in creating a brain-computer interface. fUSI offers 10,000x more channels than EEG. The primary challenge is transmitting ultrasound waves through the skull, which distorts and attenuates the signal. Surprisingly, skull attenuation is lower than previously reported, creating potential for successful functional ultrasound through the skull. Innovative de-aberration algorithms help correct distortion, while 1-2 MHz frequency range provides optimal results. The project, documented in open-source code, brings functional ultrasound closer to non-invasive brain imaging.
