Gangs in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department

Since the 1970s, deputy gangs have plagued the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, engaging in criminal activities such as police violence, corruption, vandalism, and even homicide. These gangs, often operating along ethnic lines, enforce a code of silence that discourages reporting or penalizing misconduct. The proliferation of law enforcement gangs within correctional facilities, like the Wayside Whities and the 3000 Boys, has led to alarming abuses of power, including physical abuse and torture. Despite little legislative action, recent efforts like AB 958 (Gipson) aim to prohibit the existence of law enforcement gangs, leading to investigations into the prevalence of deputy gangs within the Sheriff’s Department.
