Germany’s 49-euro ticket resulted in significant shift from road to rail

The MCC analysis for the Ariadne energy transition project revealed a 30.4 percent increase in rail journeys due to the state-subsidised 49-euro ”Deutschland-Ticket”. This led to a significant shift from road to rail, reducing CO2 emissions by 6.7 million tonnes in Germany. However, the announced price increase to 58 euros per month is expected to decrease train journeys by 14 percent and increase car travel by 3.5 percent. These findings highlight the importance of pricing in influencing people’s mobility behavior and emissions. The interactive Ariadne D-Ticket Impact Tracker allows users to explore the detailed results of the study.
