Getting things done (in small increments) (2022)

Many programmers believe that they need long periods of uninterrupted time to be productive. Meetings on a different schedule can be particularly disruptive and costly for programmers who prefer to work in blocks of at least half a day. However, it is possible to make progress in shorter increments of time, as demonstrated by a programmer who has been able to work on a side project in one-hour intervals while his children are sleeping. Some helpful tactics for working in small increments include making progress every day, knowing what the next task is, utilizing feedback loops, making a plan and keeping a log for complex tasks, and blocking distractions. These strategies, although not groundbreaking, have proven effective for the programmer.
