Giant anaconda species in the Amazon of Ecuador is the largest to be documented

Scientists from The University of Queensland, led by professor Bryan Fry, discovered a previously undocumented species of anaconda in the Ecuadorian Amazon, showcased in the National Geographic series “Pole to Pole with Will Smith.” The massive snake, dubbed the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima), is found in a smaller basin in the northern part of the Amazon and genetically differs by 5.5% from its southern counterpart. The team hopes to learn more about the ecosystem by studying the reproduction of these giant snakes, while anecdotal reports from the Huaorani people suggest even larger anacondas in the area. The research findings have been published in the journal MDPI Diversity.
