GNOME is edging closer to dropping support for the legacy X11 display server, according to two merge requests in the GNOME’s source code in Gitlab. One proposed change removes the gnome-xorg.desktop file, but the second change aims to remove the code for running GNOME on X11 altogether. While Wayland offers new features, such as running displays at different scaling factors, it still has issues with accessibility tools, DRM leasing, headless remote desktop, and variable refresh rates. This change may pose problems for users with Nvidia cards and those who rely on accessibility tools. It could also impact desktop environments that are based on GNOME components but do not support Wayland. However, it could benefit smaller players by providing better cross-platform support.
