Google mitigated the largest DDoS attack to date, peaking above 398M rps

Google’s DDoS Response Team has noticed a significant increase in the size of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Last year, they blocked the largest DDoS attack on record, and this August, they stopped an even larger attack that reached a peak of 398 million requests per second. These attacks have targeted major infrastructure providers, including Google services. Google has worked with industry partners to understand and mitigate these attacks. The most recent attack used a new technique called “Rapid Reset” based on stream multiplexing. Any organization serving HTTP-based workloads should be cautious and patch vulnerabilities to limit the impact of these attacks. Google Cloud offers protection against DDoS attacks through Cloud Armor and recommends additional security measures.
