Google News is shutting down purchased magazine content, offering refunds

Google News, known for its web links, also hosts magazines. However, Google has announced that it will be shutting down its magazine content, which was previously available for purchase. In 2012, Google started selling magazines through “Google Play Magazines,” offering individual issues and yearly subscriptions. Over the years, the service evolved, merging with Google Currents in 2013 and eventually becoming the Google News app in 2018. With the closure of magazine content sales in 2020, Google will now be shutting down the hosting of old, purchased magazine content. Users will have until December 18 to download their purchased magazines or request a refund. However, this means losing the slick user experience that Google’s original magazine offering had. Overall, the shutdown of magazine content reflects the transient nature of online content purchases.
