GRC SpinRite

Back in high school, I dealt with suspect hard drives, but nowadays, the improved technology makes modern drives more reliable. Despite owning many “spinning rust” HDDs, my laptops all use solid state drives due to their performance. Forensic analysis differs from consumer data recovery, utilizing file carving techniques to recover files efficiently. For consumer data recovery, tools like ddrescue are recommended for recovering working blocks from damaged storage devices. SpinRite, an old tool by Steve Gibson, is questionable in its claims and effectiveness, lacking updates since the late ’90s. Overall, data recovery has evolved with changes in storage technology, making some older methods obsolete.
