Thousands of security researchers gathered at the Black Hat and Defcon hacker conferences in Vegas, where a select group was invited to hack a hotel room to exploit vulnerabilities in the Saflok-brand RFID-based keycard locks. The researchers uncovered a technique, Unsaflok, allowing intruders to open millions of hotel rooms worldwide within seconds. Dormakaba, the manufacturer, is working on a fix but only 36% of locks have been updated so far. The researchers obtained Dormakaba’s software by asking people and demonstrated the attack could be executed using a $300 RFID read-write device. They warn hotel guests to check if their Saflok lock is updated, as valuable items could be at risk.
