Hacking the LG Monitor’s EDID

In this web content, the author shares their experience with encountering minor issues with their LG ULTRAGEAR monitor when using Linux. They explain that the monitor works fine on Mac and Windows, but on Linux, it only displays a black panel unless the refresh rate is reduced. The author tried various suggestions online to fix the issue, including creating an xrandr script, updating Linux Mint and the Linux kernel, but none of them worked. They eventually discovered that the issue might be with the monitor reporting the wrong mode to the OS, specifically a refresh rate of 143.923 Hz instead of the desired 60 Hz. The author then goes on to describe their debugging process and the use of the edid-decode tool to analyze the monitor’s Extended Display Identification Data (EDID). They conclude that if they could change the EDID to have a refresh rate of 60 Hz instead of 143.923 Hz, it could potentially fix the issue.
