Homemade AI Drone Software Finds People When Search and Rescue Teams Can’t

Charlie Kelly, a keen hillwalker, went missing in September 2023 while climbing Creise, a high peak in Scotland. Despite a massive search effort involving various agencies and volunteers, he was not found until six weeks later. His body was located using a new software developed by Dan Roach and David Binks, which analyzed drone images to locate missing persons efficiently. Despite facing initial resistance from the old guard in the Mountain Rescue community, Roach’s persistence paid off. The technology has since been used successfully in other searches, showing great potential for improving search and rescue operations in mountainous areas.
