How do our brains adapt to control an extra body part?

In 2022, the Third Thumb was tested at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition, with 596 participants of all ages and backgrounds. Only a few couldn’t use it due to fit or control issues. Tasks included moving pegs and objects with the Third Thumb. Almost everyone could use it right away, regardless of age, gender, or handedness. Older adults showed a decline in performance, possibly due to aging effects. Young children struggled more, with those under 10 having the most difficulty. The researchers emphasize inclusivity and the importance of designing wearable technology that is accessible and functional for a wide range of users.
